Abstract

Oedema is a clinical state characterized by excessive fluid accumulation within the interstitial or intracellular space. This condition develops when the transcapillary filtration exceeds the drainage capacity of lymphatic circulation.

Various pathophysiological mechanisms are involved including enhanced capillary pressure, reduced oncotic pressure or increased capillary permeability. The type of oedema that results from inadequate lymphatic transport is referred to as lymphoedema Benign symetric lipomatosis is a rare disorder, which could imitate lymphoedema.
