Abstract
It is a study of the living environment and behavioural strategies of academics and students at the leading Czech humanities institution. However, it is not intended to serve as a history of this faculty over this twenty-year period.
The authors used the faculty as a suitable sample to demonstrate the complex web of inspections, compromises and loyalties typical for the intellectual environment of the "normalised" Czechoslovakia in general.
