Abstract
Finlandization is a term that nowadays becomes more and more popular to describe a certain type of relationships between different states, e.g. Russia and EU members, Russia and Ukraine, or China and Taiwan.
The aim of this article is to elaborate on how and why this term connected with presidential period of Urho Kekkonen has come into use and how its understanding has evolved. The paper shows how finlandization worked in practice in Finland in the period beginning in the 1960s until the early 1990s; special attention is given to the manifestation of self-censorship.
Last part of the paper analyzes President Kekkonen's efforts to make the international community recognize Finnish neutrality.
