Can the Aral Sea be Saved?

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2012

Abstract

Since 1960, the Aral Sea has been gradually sinking in size due to excessive use of its source water for irrigating cotton plantations. This rapid change in the surface area of the lake has led to great ecological problems that are impacting inhabitants of the area around the lake.

At present, further shrinkage of the lake has been stopped and there ase sings of gradual improvement in the two main parts of the former lake.
