On relative existence and nonexistence of mental illness

Abstract

It is common to take a mental illness as an objective entity existing independently on mental health care. However, a closer look at everyday practice in psychiatric services indicates that a problem of a patient exists as an illness only in a specific situation.

Borders of the illness are ordinarily moved in the care - it depends on the specific situation whether some behavior counts as a part of mental illness or not.
