The chapter makes a overview of traits of an "intellectual" and his/her role in the public realm. It analyzes the scholastic view as a "jeu désintéressé" submitting him/her at the same time to the dependance on external sources and acceptance.
The dark side of this view consists in a scholastic illusion which make us believe all the people has the same (universal) disposition to share the scholastic view. Today, this illusion leads to the emergence of a new category of people - the experts (increasingly replacing the Intellectual").
