Information education has become one of the traditional library services, provided by libraries of various types. Educational activities are part of everyday duties for many librarians and patrons are more often getting involved in the workshops, courses and other educational events taking place in their library.
The paper defines information education as one of the crucial parts of the concept of library as the cultural institution. New trends in the user education, especially in the academic libraries, are mentioned.
Moving from the large classrooms to the on e-on-one tutoring of the individual students seems to be one of them. One of the successful and time-proven ways of improving the information literacy across the campus is through the close co-operation between faculty members and librarians.
This co-operation may result in the assignments and projects that highly motivate students to work with various information resources critically. Also, the ethical aspects of using information are emphasized.
The information education in the libraries can be also seen, maybe surprisingly, from the perspective of technology and architecture. The user education in the Czech academic libraries needs to undergo some changes in following years.
This paper brings several suggestions in this area, as well as the impact these changes might have on the position of the library within the community. The issue of educational services evaluation will be also mentioned.
