Abstract
The study focuses on the early prosaic work of Jan Neruda, including in particular the short stories collected in the 1864 Arabesques and the 1871 Various People, as well as some pieces published only in periodicals. The motifs of interest are bodily or mental handicaps and social exclusion, which appear as the constant attribute of Neruda's characters of this period.
