Magmatic stoping, i.e., the formation, transfer into, and movement through magma of older plutonic and metamorphic host-rock xenoliths, was widespread in the Mesozoic Sierra Nevada batholith (California, United States). However, the prevailing view that stoped blocks form by rapid thermal shattering.
