Abstract
The article describes the historical development and fruitful tradition of mathematics (teaching and research) at Charles University in Prague. The origin of the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics as well as the main research trends and their important representatives are recalled.
The main focus is devoted to a deeper analysis of the development of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics during the sixty years of its existence.
