Abstract
It was already before the First World War when 20th century architecture started to turn away from the excessive ornaments characteristic for art nouveau to minimalistic and modern geometrical trends, or to the style of art deco. The artistic conception was gradually liberated from figural and linear complexness, which later came out manifestly in the principles of cubistic buildings.
It is this very change of architectonic styles turning away from ornaments to simple motives that makes the subject of this paper. The authors ponder on what role the motive of symmetry and its violation in Czech cubism is and to what extent complying with the discovered rules may secure the final, highly aesthetic effect.
The authors use representative Czech cubist buildings to demonstrate the use of symmetry and its intentional violation and the influence of these principles on the final effect. Thus the authors contribute to the current research in the area of interdisciplinary teaching and connection of art, architecture and mathematics.
