Abstract

The aim of the thesis was to prepare a theoretical framework for the course "Language-learning Theory and Practice for ELT". The course serves as an introduction to ELT methodology for future teachers of English at secondary schools for whom it provides theoretical foundations of the general principles of learning, language acquisition and the learning of foreign languages.

The thesis contains the course syllabus and describes theoretical foundations of each seminar. Amongst the topics covered are the following: an overview of language theories and their application to language learning, the relation between general and applied linguistics especially in the context of functional structuralism, an overview of the history of language teaching (methods), the theory of first and second language acqisition, learner variables, learning styles and strategies, learner autonomy, the theory of the good language learner and teacher, introduction to textbook theory.

The thesis also contains all handouts for the individual seminars
