Abstract

Based on the narration of the medieval chronicles of Savoy on the visit of Emperor Charles IV to St Maurice's Abbey in Valais in June 1365 and on his obtaining the relics of King Sigismund of Burgundy, the author deduces the existence of the presumed, but not confirmed, library of Charles IV. According to the chronicles of Savoy, Charles IV did not set out on the journey without being equipped with good books.

It is likely that Charles IV possessed his 'travelling library' mainly the practical books which he needed for his (political) activities, but also for educational reading
