Literary "Travels Eastward" : The Poetics of a Modern Travel Narrative

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The paper focuses on some generic features in modern narrated travel literature (travelogue), comparing compositional possibilities and limits of both fictional and factual (documentary, informational or educative) manifestations of this literary genre. Besides analyzing several notable narrative techniques of three contemporary Slavonic authors - Martin Rysavy, Jan Litvak and Andrey Bitov - it also juxtaposes two archetypal motifs ('topoi') of the sacred and profane, seemingly reserved only for fictional literature.

The overall goal is to show what constitutes literary and poetic qualities of a modern travel narration, when the focus is not on mere distinction between the factual and fictional aspects of its textual ontology.
