THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIC REDSHIRTING AND RISK OF SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to introduce one part of the European project ELDEL (Enhancing literacy development in European languages). The main goal of the project - the identification of predictors for reading and spelling will be introduced, as well as the connection with specific learning disorders.

In the present study we focused on one particular area that was recognized as ambiguous during the investigation - the academic redshirting phenomenon. In our study we analysed the sample of 20 children that were recommended for academic redshirting and that were originally part of our sample (210 children) following from kindergarten to the end of second grade.

We compared the scores of those children recommended for academic redshirting with the rest of the sample in several tests that focus on predictors of reading and spelling. We are interested to learn if those children are significantly worse, and if so, in which tests.
