The aim of the study is to describe a development of literacy in the beginning of school in Slovak speaking children. The study shows, how a reading develops from preschool age to the end of a second grade.
The study focuses on several different aspects. The present study focuses on reading technique as a first step of a process to learning to read and analyze it in several aspects - accuracy, speed and fluency and compare their development in several different tests.
In a second part is a short mention about another very important aspect of reading - comprehension. This topic generates separate theme that should be investigate in details and it exceeds possibilities of this article, so this topic is just mentioned in passing and we will focus on that in future studies.
The analyses were performed in a group of Slovak speaking children and then differentiated poor readers that were categorized according different variables. We observed their development and stability in early stages of literacy development.
At the end of the study we conclude our findings to several practical conclusions for practice of poor readers diagnostic process.
