Abstract

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal neoplasia of gastrointestinal tract in dogs so as in human beings. GISTs are defined as gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumours expressing a protooncogene tyrosin-kinase protein called c-KIT detected by immunohistochemistry.

A case of an 11 years old dog, WHWT, with intramural esophageal tumor diagnosed based on radiologic, ultrasonographic and endoscopic examination is presented. A postmortal dissection confirmed neoplasia arising from the esophageal submucosa.

Histologically, the tumor was classified as esophageal stromal tumor. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of canine gastrointestinal stromal tumor located in esophagus.
