The 5qMINUS SIGN as a separate WHO subgroup is generally considered homogenous with very good prognosis, long survival and relatively low risk of transformation to AML. When we retrospectively analyze data from patients with isolated 5qMINUS SIGN abnormality with IPSS low or intermediate-1, we identify thrombocytopenia to be a consistent marker predicting shorter survival with strong statistical significance.
We decided to analyze the prognostic impact of thrombocytopenia in patients with isolated 5qMINUS SIGN which is considered one of the best prognostic groups. Moreover, these patients have a high rate of AML transformation or progression to high risk MDS.
We collected data from 91 MDS patients with isolated 5q abnormality diagnosed in several Czech hematologic centers from 2000 to 2011.
