Abstract

The paper describes history of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists (UCMP) starting in 1862 with creation of the student "Society for unbound lectures in mathematics and physics". The main attention is devoted to some historical periods which were not yet described in recent literature.

Specifically, the history of company Fysma for production of educational and scientific instruments, publishing company Prometheus, and the difficult period after the communist coup d'etat in February 1948 during which the Union almost perished. The period following the revival of the UCMP in 1958 is decribed only briefly.
