Abstract

The goal of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the so-called Gershgorin circles of a complex square matrix. The union of the Gershgorin circles is a region in the complex plane which contains all the eigenvalues of the given matrix.

The beauty of Gershgorin's theorem consists in its simplicity because circles are obtained by easy arithmetic operations on the entries of the matrix.
