The paper explores the potential that translation has for language teaching. In addition to the traditional Grammar Translation Method - now generally out of use - translation, and its oral counterpart, interpreting, when used effectively and based on a well-planned strategy, can be used to enhance all four basic skills trained in language learning, i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking, and can, in fact, become a fifth skill which language learners may find useful in their working careers or as potential clients of other professional translators.
