The paper introduces the East European and Balkan Institute of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, its history and present activities. On the ocassion of its 20th anniversary, the Institute held an international conference in fall 2011, the topic being "Mapping the Cultural and Civic Tradition in Central and Eastern Europe, and Balkans".
Scholars from 10 countries participated at the conference. The Institute has six departments, since 1988 one of them being the Czech and Slovak Studies department which it is the only university place in South Korea where Czech is taught.
The linguistic section of the conference presented e.g. the paper on the language management in one of the fields of Czech-Korean cooperation, by J. Nekvapil and T.
Sherman form Charles University in Prague.
