Abstract

Bohumil Shimek (1861-1937) is a significant personality of the turn of the 19th and 20th century. He is remembered as a scientist and pedagogue in geology, palaeontology, botany and zoology, but he extended his scientific interest into other fields.

However, we know only little about his contribution to mycology, Mykologické listy, Praha, no. 121, 2012. 33 especially the study of fungal diversity in the USA and Nicaragua. Most probably, he was an experienced mycologist with vast knowledge of polypores and pyrenomycetes.

B. Shimek's rich herbarium material recently revealed in PRC represents an important source for taxonomic studies of basidiomycetes and pyrenomycetes.
