Abstract
The Žofín primeval forest is the first protected area on the territory of the Czech Republic. Its history was surprisingly compilcated, its area was changed for several times shortly after its enectment.
The study presents the history of the Žofín primeval forest as a model situation of a conflict between modern-day forestry approach and effort to conserve an a natural forest.
