Čapek's Reflective Poetics of the Detective Story; or, the Detective as a Reader

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

An analysis of Čapek's approach to the genre of detective story, which is an example of literary self-reflexivity. The significations of individual stories are drawn to the problems of reading, understanding and interpretation: the detective's activity of deciphering meanings is in principle a literary interpretation, "hermeneutics" of a trace/clue.
