The article comments on the latest orthographic reform of the Portuguese language approved by the representatives of eight Portuguese-speaking countries. Having summarized the situation of Portuguese orthography in Portugal and in Brazil during the last hundred years, with a special attention given to the most important differences between the two Portuguese variants, we report on research undertaken at the Faculty of Arts in Prague (Master's thesis) about the current implementation of the new orthography in Portuguese newspapers, formulating some critical remarks about the agreement.
