Organ transplants are a life-saving operation, which means the patient quality of life. Patients indicated for a heart transplant are placed on a waiting list for organs.
When transplanted will depend on whether there is a suitable donor. In general, a suitable donor organs and little demand far exceeds supply.
The IKEM has been developed mechanical cardiac support program as a "bridge" to heart transplantation. Allows patients with end-stage heart failure after implantation of support "safe" ride out the wait time for an organ.
Last year in IKEM performed 43 heart transplants, of which 13 patients before transplantation are connected to mechanical cardiac support. Heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support is now standard treatment for advanced heart failure.
