Helmold of Bosau: Chronicle of the Slavs

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2012

Abstract

Commented translation of Latin chronicle of the Saxon priest Helmold (1120 - after 1177), who was active in Bosau in today's Schleswig-Holstein. It is an important source for a history of Holy Roman Empire, as well as for the history of today extincted Slavic tribes, who lived by the Baltic Sea and by the Elbe.

The narration begins at the end of the 8th century and finishes with 1163. The author celebrates first of all Christianity, but he is able to understand the pression against the Slavs also critically.
