Abstract

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterized as a chronic widespread pain condition accompanied by tenderness, fatigue, sleep disturbance, decrements in physical functions, and disruptions in psychical modalities. A precise cause of FM is unknown, but is evident that altered brain activity during pain processing is a pathogenetic background of this disorder.

Expected frequency of FM in general population is 1-4%, mostly in women at the age of 50+ y. Evidence based recommendation for management of FM include heated pool treatment with or without exercise, analgetics (tramadol), antidepressants (amytriptyline, fluoxetine, duloxetine ect.), and other therapies depending on the needs of the individual patient.
