Abstract
French, the same as all living languages, undergo pronunciation and orthographic changes. In order to bring a spoken version of the language nearer to a written one, and in the effort to simplify often a non-systematic written form of the language, The French Academy approved a few hundred suggested orthographic changes in 1990.
These changes are the matter in discussion even after more than twenty years and they are not generally widespread and known among the speakers and language users. The article presents a "new" reform of the French orthography, its causes and consequences.
It mainly deals with the changes which have been made regarding the change of the pronunciation, it offers the comparison of the situation before and after the reform and it tries to generalize the explanation of the current rules. It also introduces the present reflection on the mentioned changes in the textbooks of French as a foreign language, in dictionaries and information technology tools and also in professional publications dealing with the matter.
