Abstract

Sport of the handicapped is an integral part of the social life of a developed society. Our effort is focused on presenting information about sport of the intellectually disabled, thus about sport that is insufficiently presented and supported in comparison with sport of the other handicaps.

The objective of our interest should be not only athletes with moderate and mild intellectual disability (IQ 50-55 till 70-75), who we meet especially in sport in the organisation INAS and the Czech Sports Association of the Intellectually Disabled (in Czech: ČSMPS), but also athletes with a more severe level of handicap, who mainly do sport in the organisation Special Olympics (SOI) and the Special Olympics Czech Republic (in Czech: ČHSO). The goal of our work equals the concept - sport in people with intellectual disability (ID).

Tasks based on the defined goal are the following: - definition of the concept of the intellectual disability - history and the present of sport of the intellectually disabled in the world - international sport achievements of the athletes organised in ČSMPS - the use of physical activities as a suitable way of using leisure time, and as the prevention of socially undesirable activities of the intellectually disabled - goals of sport training of children and the youth with ID - the system of sport training and special characteristics of training in persons with ID - a comparative study - the comparison between the performance level in healthy people and those with ID in sport, in motor tests, and the comparison between IQ and performance level.
