Abstract

he aim of the paper is to analyse images of the exemplary masculinity in the period of the Czechoslovak late socialism and its construction in TV shows, that used to be the most preferred genre of the period popular culture. I am using Gramsci's concept of hegemony and cultural studies approaches in my study.

My main interpretational tool is R. W.

Conell's concept of hegemonic masculinity. The ideal socialist men, how it is depicted in some Jaroslav Dietl's TV shows, can serve as a pattern for the hegemonic masculinity.

Other accepted or refused patterns of masculinity are analysed as well. As a conclusion, I discuss the question of the social acceptance of the propagated ideal masculinity.

In my point of view, the late socialist hegemonic masculinity was the single official way, how to avoid marginalisation of common men in society and family.
