Transformations of the Image of St. Francis Xavier in the Bohemian Baroque Hagiography in the Central-European Context

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2012

Abstract

The paper deals with the transformations of the Xaverian legend in the Bohemian literature of the 17th and 18th century. First, it follows the diffusion of the great Xaverian legends from the Southern Europe (O.

Torsellini, J. de Lucena, D. Bartoli, G.

Massei, D. Bouhours) to the Central Europe (predominantly Holy Roman Empire and the royal Hungary, as a part of the Habsburg Monarchy) and their local reception.

Then the paper pays attention to local adaptions of the Xaverian legend created in the Bohemian literature.
