COMPREHENSIVE AEROSOL CHARACTERIZATION IN OSTRAVA-BARTOVICE, WINTER 2012: C-PAH SIZE DISTRIBUTION

Abstract

Concentration dynamics of eight types of cancerogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons c-PAH in the organic extracts from coarse (1<dae<10 micrometers), upper (0.5< dae<1 micrometers), and lower (0.17< dae<0.5 micrometers) accumulation, and ultrafine (dae<0.17 micrometers) size fractions of ambient aerosols were studied. Aerosol samples were collected in Ostrava-Bartovice locality from the 25th January to 21st February 2012.

Upper and lower accumulation aerosols bond about 60%, coarse 25-30%, and ultrafine 10-15% of c-PAH total mass. C-PAH size distribution is always monomodal (mode between 0.5-1 micrometers).

Percentage of each c-PAH in specified size fraction increases with its molecular weight and differences among particle sizes are not significant. Both low temporal size distribution variability and low concentration of c-PAH in ultrafine aerosol point to single, dominating c-PAH source in the locality and low importance of mobile sources as a source of c-PAH.
