Diabetes mellitus is a severe chronic life-long disease, which is diagnosed in about 6% of the population. In many aspects it is considered a psycho-somatic disease.
Some mental disorders, especially depression, are more common in diabetic patients compared to the rest of the population. Diabetes mellitus affects psyche of the patients, but at the same time mental state of the patients influences the course of diabetes.
The causal links are different depending on the type of diabetes and mental disorder. Nonetheless, the association is observed on a level of emotions and mental processes, but also in biochemical and hormonal aspects.
In this article we will focus only on diabetes mellitus type 1.
