Improving physical health of people with schizophrenia: An important objective for mental health care

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Schizophrenia is connected with increased frequency of physical illness and reduced life expectancy compared to general population. Life-style factors, social adversity, poor health knowledge, symptoms of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, treatment effects and stigma are involved.

There is evidence that patients recognize the problem, accept interventions when offered, and comply with medical advice. Wellness programmes promote healthy lifestyle, screen potential risk factors, prevent social isolation and promote destigmatization.
