Abstract

Fractures of the scapula are an open chapter in traumatology of the musculokeletal apparatus. In order to understand them it is necessary to have the basic anatomical and clinical knowlege.

Most of scapula fractures are associated with other severe injuries, particularly of the chest. The X-ray diagnostics, especially the two Neer projections and 3D CT reconstructons are of vital importance for diagnostics and treatment of these fractures. The existing classifictions have to be revised as they do not reflect the real types of fractures.

In displaced fractures surgical treatment must be considered. Surgery is not urgent and may be performed as long as three weeks after the primary injury..

As these fractures are severe but rare type of injury it is recommend to concentrate their treatment in specialized departments.
