Fractures of the posterior tibial margin in ankle fractures

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2012

Abstract

In terms of diagnosis, classification or treatment, avulsion of the posterior lip of the tibia in fracture dislocations or incomplete fractures of the pilon has not been satisfactorily solved, yet. It is always necessary to evaluate in detail the type of the fracture, not only on the basis of radiographs, but mainly CT scans.

Criteria of indication for reduction and fixation are considered to be the size of the fragment of more than 25% of the articular surface and step-off displacement of more than 2 mm. Mastering of the technique of the open reduction and fixation from the posteromedial or posterolateral approach may significantly contribute to a successful operative treatment of these injuries.
