Abstract

The paper compares ideas and theories on the origin and development of the syphilitic epidemics in works of three prominent early modern physicians: Girolamo Fracastoro (De contagione), Jean Fernel (De abditis rerum causis), and Johannes van Helmont (Tumultus pestis).
