Oxidative stress after therapeutic laser and gamma irradiation

Publication

Abstract

Ionizing radiation belongs to the main exogenous sources of free radicals, which can then involve the damage to healthy biomolecules and tissues. If the anti-oxidative protection of the organism is exhaus-ted, then it is possible to demonstrate the presence of products of the damage to molecules with free radicals, among others with reactive aldehydes (for example malondialdehyde), final products of lipo-peroxidation of the reactive carbonyl compound produced by the oxidation of proteins or products of damage to the DNA.

The antioxidants are chemical compounds that can bind to free oxygen radicals preventing these radicals from damaging healthy cells. Low levels of antioxidants, or inhibition of the antioxidant enzymes causes oxidative stress and may damage or kill cells. The purpose of this project was to establish the changes at malondialdehyde after LLLT and gamma irradiation.

We used female mice of the strain CD1.The mice were exposed in the abdomen region to laser light and 60-Co.
