One-stage revision

Abstract

One-stage revision consists of the removal of the implant, careful debridement and reimplantation of a new endoprosthesis within a single surgical procedure. When compared with two-stage revision the main advantages are the requirement of only one surgery, less hospitalisation, quicker recovery and improved results of joint function, less rehabilitation time and therefore, reduced costs.

In one stage exchange, the sensitivity of the infecting organism has to be known before a radical debridement is performed in combination with your choosen antibiotic therapy. Prosthesis must be fixed with bone cement as this allows local delivery of high concentrations of antibiotics.
