Functional imaging of deep brain stimulation: fMRI, SPECT, and PET

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2008

Abstract

Chapter gives an overview of the relevant literature about functional imaging of deep brain stimulation (DBS). While there is any doubt about the clinical effects of DBS, our knowledge about its functioning is limited.

The methods of functional imaging – functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET) measuring the cerebral blood flow or fluorodeoxyclucose metabolism – may help to understand the mechanisms of neurostimulation at the site of stimulation providing a global view of what is happening in the rest of the brain.
