Treatment of Alzheimer´s disease and some other dementias - Guidelines of Czech Psychiatric Association, JEP

Abstract

At present, the aetiology of Alzheimer´s disease or lated neurodegenerative dementias is still unknown so we are still unable to treat these disorders causally. Therefore, only symptomatic and disease-modifying pharmacotherapy is currently used.

There are two clearly evidence based approaches at present for both Alzheimer´s disease and Lewy body dementias: therapy with cholinesterase inhibitors and therapy with memantine. There are many other approaches used that are not evidence-based.

Some of these warrant further extensive clinical trials.
