Changes in intracellular signalling in Alzheimer’s disease

Abstract

Several competing hypotheses exist trying to explain the cause of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD); however, some important aspects of the AD mechanism are not yet fully understood. Selected neurobiological parameters were measured in the peripheral blood of patients with diagnosis of AD, including plasma concentrations of neurotrophic factor BDNF, homocysteine, cortisol, prolactin and melatonin, concentrations of transcription factor CREB and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3), activity of citrate synthase, and activities of respiratory chain complexes in mitochondria.

Changes in biological parameters were compared with changes in clinical evaluation, e.g. mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and geriatric depression scale (GDS).
