Effect of erythropoietin on hepcidin expression in hemojuvelin-mutant mice

Abstract

The erytropoetin induced decrease of hepcidin mRNA is almost completely inhibited by iron pretreatment in mice. It is posible to deduce that in patients with transfusional iron overload the down regulation of hepcidin, which would normaly occured after erytropoetin, is blocked by the excess iron accumulated in macrophages.
