Abstract

Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrinological disease and is due to the pathological hormone deficiency. If not treated the consequences to the most organs are serious.

Once suspected the diagnosis can be quickly confirmed or excluded using TSH laboratory examination. If the treatment with thyroxine (T4) is straightforward the patients prognosis is excellent.

The dose of thyroxine should be adjusted to normalize TSH concentration Recomendation regarding the initiation of T4 treatment in subclinical hypothyroid persons is still the matter od debate and depends on different circumstancies.
