Non epileptic psychogenic seizures

Abstract

Non epileptic psychogenic seizures probably represent the most common diagnostic mistake in epileptology. We can distinguish two types, swoon and tantrum, according to their clinical manifestation.

The diagnostic mistakes are primarily caused by erroneous history interpretation. It is necessary to pay special attention to important points of the history, like the occurrence pattern of seizures, their duration, treatment response and other special characteristics.

Long term video-EEG monitoring appears to be the most significant auxiliary means of examination, the importance of others is secondary. Treatment of non-epileptic seizures is difficult and is based mainly on psychotherapy.

Early diagnosis is the most important factor from a prognostic point of view.
