Abstract

Representatives of four genera of free-living amoebae, namely Naegleria, Acanthamoeba, Sappinia (so far only one case described in 1998) and Balamuthia, infect the human brain. This paper summarizes the current knowledge of Balamuthia mandrillaris as a causative agent of infections of the brain.
