Unconsciousness is deviation from the status when an individual is fully aware about himself and his environment and is able to behave according to his will. Disorders of consciousness can be classified as quantitative (somnolence, sopor, coma) and qualitative (amence, delirium).
Aetiology can be very heterogenous – various conditions leading to metabolic disorders, exogenic intoxications and brain disorders. History of specific disease which can present with unconsciousness is an important part of diagnosis, as well as precious physical examination including neurological examination, laboratory tests and CT, NMR or duplex ultrasonography of brain arteries.
Therapy includes stabilisation of vital functions and specific therapy according to the cause of unconsciousness.
