We demonstrate that histone acetyltransferases (HATs) PCAF (p-300/CBP-associated factor) and hGCN5 (human general control nonrepresible-related 5) interact with MITF in vitro and in cells, and the transactivation domain and bHLH region of MITF are essential for this interaction. Thus, the two HATs, PCAF and hGCN5, may modulate MITF activity independently of their acetyltransferase function.
